Official show of "Global Civil War" short film by Tasos Sagris at The European Media Art Festival

I am very happy to inform my friends
about the show of my short film "Global Civil War"
at the
European Media Art Festival 2014

The European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück / Germany is one of the most important forums of international Media Art, and is an open laboratory for creative and artistic experiments that help shape media and the aesthetics of their content. As a lively meeting place for artists, curators, lenders, gallery owners and a specialist audience, it has been instrumental in forming the themes and aesthetics of Media Art.

Global Civil War from + the Institute on Vimeo.

"In contrast to civil war, which signifies the breakdown of the apparatus of the state, social war is the low-intensity war by the state against the social relationships of its own population in order to maintain its continued existence. The social war then encompasses the totality of everyday life: To be alive today is to be at war, to never sleep properly, to awaken at odd hours to work, to be constantly surrounded by surveillance and police. A further recital of the various symptoms is unnecessary. Unlike in military war, demands of any kind are futile: demands would only make sense as long as the social war was limited in time and space, yet the capitalist form of life today encompasses the entire globe and imagines its reproduction extending into the infinite future."

We, the enemy - living under suspicion

Why we – classified collectively as suspect – are subjected to mass surveillance, treated as ‘enemies’ and, at the same time, morph into surveilling ‘enemies’ ourselves are just some of the issues explored at the European Media Art Festival, which will be staged in Osnabrück from 23 to 27 April 2014.
How far does total control via surveillance cameras, GPS data in vehicles and mobile end devices, and the storage of communication data go? In his novel entitled “1984”, George Orwell described a surveillance dictatorship 65 years ago that seems to have long become part of our everyday lives.
Concerning the topic “WE, THE ENEMY – living under suspicion”, in its extensive programme EMAF reflects on how the current international art scene responds to digital surveillance, and which digital self-defence strategies can be pursued.

During the festival, a wide range of contemporary films and videos by prestigious artists and young talents alike will be shown at various cinemas. Full-length movies, short films, animations, music clips, documentaries and experimental films will be presented. A number of programmes will also be dedicated to this year’s festival topic.
Media art scene experts and investigative journalists will delve into the topic of social control – and above all, how to escape it – in lectures, workshops and panel sessions.
This year’s EMAF exhibition will be held at Kunsthalle Osnabrück from 23 April to 25 May. It will showcase objects, sound art, light installations and video projections that explore mass digital surveillance and that shed light on the relationships between power, business, art, the individual and society.

Once again this year, EMAF is dedicated to promoting young artists in its Media Campus, where students from national and international art and media academies are given the opportunity to present their work. The Campus programme comprises workshops, an exhibition area, and film and video programmes.

At this year’s festival, a varied late-night programme will offer entertainment featuring live performances, parties and sound projects that will use acoustic and visual effects to create a great atmosphere. One of the highlights this year is the “Audiovisual Salon”, which will be staged in the impressive setting of Osnabrück’s Bergkirche.
